Prospect Watch: With Brett Sullivan in the majors, the starting catcher job in El Paso also opened up. Kevin Plawecki has seized the opportunity and run with it. After playing sparingly throughout most of the year, the long-time veteran has gotten most of the playing time since Sulli moved up. Over his last five games, Plawecki, who signed his second minor league free agent contract with the Padres over the winter, is 7-for-18, with three homers, and five RBI. It’s good enough for a 1.278 OPS. … Tirso Ornelas also continued his hot hitting, adding another multi-hit game to his ledger. Since June 11, Ornelas has reached base safely in 15 of his last 17 games, hitting .333/.397/.606 with five home runs in that stretch. The five home runs are more than he had in two months in Triple-A last year. … Graham Pauley went hitless, but did draw a pair of walks. Pauley is coming off a nightmare month of hitting just .172/.206/.258 with no home runs. This is the same player who homered 16 times in 45 High-A games last year. After drawing just one walk in his previous 52 trips to the plate, the usually patient left-handed batter has three free passes in the last two nights, a positive sign as he works to get back on track. … Jose Azocar continued to scuffle in his seventh game since being sent down. He went 0-for-4 and is now just 6-for-28 with two doubles and no walks. … Righty Logan Gillaspie pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his fifth save of the year. The 27-year-old righty, who has already spent two stints in the big leagues this season, has allowed just five runs over his last 18.1 innings of work despite only recording 11 strikeouts.

Prospect Watch: After working a smooth 1,2,3 third inning, Victor Lizarraga was lifted for an injury before the start of the fourth inning. No details have been released yet, but the 20-year-old righty had been on a roll through the first half, posting a 3.50 ERA with 62 strikeouts through 61.1 innings of work. … Lizarraga was replaced by Miguel Cienfuegos, who was sent down to Double-A earlier this week. The former indy ball hurler had a solid campaign with Fort Wayne before being roughed up for a 7.66 ERA in five Triple-A starts. He made the most of his first outing in Double-A, going five strong innings, striking out five, and earning the win. … The offensive standout for the game was Ray-Patrick Didder. The 29-year-old doubled twice, drew a walk, and stole three bases as he scored a pair of runs. Didder posted a .917 OPS last year in El Paso, only to be sent down a level this year. After starting slow, Didder has reached base 15 times over the last eight games with 11 stolen bases.
Lansing Lugnuts 2, TinCaps 1
Key Stats: LHP Jagger Haynes 6 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 K; DH Ethan Salas 1-for-3, 2B; 1B Romeo Sanabria 2-for-4

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps dropped a pitchers’ duel in Lansing, failing to capitalize on another quality start from Jagger Haynes. The 21-year-old lefty’s only hiccup came in the third inning. After a one-out walk, Haynes made an errant throw on a pickoff attempt, and seemed visibly shaken by it. He then gave up three consecutive hits before escaping while leaving two men on. Haynes fought through traffic on the bases over the next two innings, but finished his outing with flair, striking out a pair in a perfect sixth inning to log his sixth quality starts in his last seven starts (he also had an abbreviated relief appearance behind Yu Darvish along the way). The only start he did not go six innings; he went 5.1 innings, allowing one run. He’s now posted a 2.38 ERA over that nearly two-month stretch. … The TinCaps’ best chance to even the score came in the fourth, when Romeo Sanabria led off with one of his two hits on the night before Ethan Salas ripped a double down the line that glanced off the first baseman’s glove. Salas has doubled in back-to-back games after snapping an 0-for-22 slump. Unfortunately, with a contact play on, Griffin Doersching then hit a ball right back to the pitcher who hung up Sanabria between third and home before turning an unconventional 1-5-4 double play to end the inning. The TinCaps didn’t have another runner on until the ninth inning.

Prospect Watch: The Padres put up five runs on just two hits in the seventh and final inning to turn this one into a laugher. The club benefited from four walks, two wild pitches and a past ball in the frame. … 20-year-old Spence Coffman had the second of his two hits on the day in middle of the rally. The 2022 19th-round draftee out of high school in Mississippi has been the club’s biggest breakout prospect in the ACL this year in a testament to the Padres’ development process. After hitting .237 last year in Peoria, Coffman is hitting .331 with a team-leading 15 stolen bases over 42 games. Coffman also leads the team with 45 hits and 23 RBIs and is second with 24 runs as he makes the adjustment to playing the outfield almost daily. … While Coffman is a converted shortstop learning center field, Colton Vincent is a catcher who is also logging most of his time in the outfield. The 24-year-old out of Florida State added another two hits including a double Wednesday and has eight hits over his last four games, including three doubles. Vincent spent time in Lake Elsinore and Fort Wayne earlier in the season, before settling in with the Peoria club. He’s hitting a solid .337/.406/.470 this season.
